Each issue begins with a moment of awareness.
The Stimuli
Bring to mind something challenging you’re carrying right now — a stress, a pressure, a situation that feels heavier than you’d like.
Now bring to mind one thing that’s helping you stay steady through it.
Holding both at the same time?
That’s the skill.
🦃Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week and may your travels be blessed, smooth, and joyous. 🦃
“We can hold pain in one hand and compassion in the other.”
―Pema Chödrön (Buddhist Teacher)
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”
— Viktor Frankl (Holocaust Survivor)
The Upgrade (Grounded Psychology)
The human mind loves simplicity:
“All good” or “all bad.”
Once the brain labels something as difficult, it tends to color everything in that direction.
But emotional resilience comes from dual awareness — the ability to acknowledge what’s hard and what’s supportive at the same time.
This isn’t denial.
It’s balance.
Gratitude, when practiced honestly, widens your internal lens.
It gives context to the hard things without dismissing them.
Psychologically, this interrupts cognitive narrowing — the tunnel vision we fall into under stress.
You’re not forcing yourself to be positive.
You’re reminding your system that difficulty is not the whole story.
Gratitude becomes the anchor, not the escape hatch.
A 30-Second Practice (Emotionally Honest + Effective)
Most people try to use gratitude to cancel out the hard stuff.
Don’t do that.
Use gratitude to hold the whole picture:
Complete this sentence:
“This part is hard… and I’m thankful for ___ because it gives me ___.”
Examples:
“This part is hard… and I’m thankful for my routine because it keeps me grounded.”
“This part is hard… and I’m thankful for this person because they remind me I’m not alone.”
“This part is hard… and I’m thankful for my progress because it shows me I’m still moving.”
This practice doesn’t erase pain — it restores proportion.
It brings your nervous system out of all-or-nothing thinking and back into reality.

✨ Closing Thought
Let gratitude expand your perspective without denying reality.
You can hold both the hard and the helpful at once — and that is the essence of true steadiness.
